Beyond Values 03/25 (en)

Museum für Werte

Hi you,

the third edition of Beyond Values is here – and this time, it’s all about something we often overlook: Values are not a solo act. They come alive where we meet others, where we clash, connect – or simply listen. What’s inside this issue: reflections on the power of relationships, a visit to the newsroom of WELT, a ping pong match against loneliness, and the question of which value is challenging you most right now. Take five – and dive into what really matters.

Why Values Are Never a Solo Act

“Show me who you spend your time with, and I’ll tell you what matters to you.”

It’s a well-worn phrase, maybe even a bit cliché – but in our daily work at the Museum of Values, we see the truth in it again and again. Because what we consider valuable rarely emerges in isolation. It grows in relationship. With others.

„Only in the eyes of the other do I understand myself.“

Marina Abramović

We’ve witnessed it when young people discover new sides of themselves after spending a single day with someone they’d never met before. When one conversation is enough to challenge a fixed idea. Or when a team realizes that, in the midst of stress and change, it’s not performance but trust that holds everything together. And these aren’t just our observations. Studies show: relationships shape our values. The people we’re connected to influence our beliefs more than we often realize. Their convictions affect not just our thinking, but our actions – especially when we believe we share common ground. That shared sense of meaning strengthens our relationships – and our sense of belonging.

Even in the workplace, it’s often not the tasks but the relationships that determine how fulfilled we feel. When we feel seen and understood, we’re more likely to show up fully – even when things get tough.

All of this reinforces what drives us: to create spaces for real connection. For exchange. For experience.

Spaces where values aren’t just talked about – but lived.

And you – what shaped you?

Future Skill Summit - Bertelsmann Stitung

Is connection a future skill?

We recently attended the Future Skills Summit – and came back with lots of inspiring insights. What do we really need to navigate change? Alongside skills like critical thinking, adaptability, and resilience, there’s one quality that often goes overlooked: How do we stay connected?

To ourselves. To others. To what truly matters.

Jennifer Wilton: Freedom and Responsibility in Journalism

Lina meets Jennifer Wilton, Editor-in-Chief of WELT, in the buzzing newsroom of Axel Springer’s headquarters. In an open conversation, Jennifer shares her thoughts on freedom, the responsibility that comes with journalism, and the challenge of separating opinion from reporting. She reflects on the Berlin Wall as a symbol of freedom and the fragility of democracy. A deep and honest talk about courage, fear, and the ongoing struggle for freedom in our society.

The Beauty of Values

berlin sustainability week 2025

Berlin Values

As part of the Berlin Sustainability Week 2025, we took part in the GICA Special Edition alongside impact-driven companies and future shapers at the Berlin Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Through interactive formats, we explored one central question: How do we shape a city that radiates from within – and creates global impact?

Our highlight? The values of Berlin, made tangible – bold, clear, future-focused: Openness. Ideas over money. Performance + ethics. Values that don’t just sound good – but define what Berlin can be: a city with purpose and attitude.

Every month, we bring you five minutes of inspiration to share thoughts, must-read books, must-hear podcasts, and must-see projects. A small moment for big ideas so that values don’t just remain words but become part of our daily lives.

The IndieWeb is a movement that aims to make the internet personal again – a web that belongs to us.

Instead of posting content on major platforms that control visibility and reach, it’s about taking back control: of our data, our identity, and what we choose to share – and with whom.

Thoughts on Values

Who are you? What do you do? We all know small talk. But what happens when we skip it? Thoughts on Values gets straight to the core – exploring what truly matters. Every month, we invite people to share their personal values: what drives them, what challenges them, and what we as a society should live by more.

John Kolya Reichart

This month, John Kolya Reichart shares his perspective with us – director, photographer, and someone with a unique eye for what connects us.

He talks about wrestling with impatience, why honesty is the key to closeness, and why it’s time to think big about hope again. 👇

A value that guides me:
„Patience. I know some things take time. But since I’m a very spontaneous person, I sometimes really struggle with that.“

A value that challenges me:
„Honesty. I think it’s incredibly important to be honest with myself and with the people around me – it’s the only way to build real, deep relationships.“

A value we need more of in society:
„Hope. I believe we need to work on looking to the future with joy and hope again – as a society.“

Which values guide you – and which ones challenge you? Take five.
